Fourteen homes approved behind former Northampton Chronicle & Echo site

An outline planning application was approved in 2016 for a store, car parking and housing on the former newspaper offices

Northampton Borough Council has approved a new housing scheme to be located off Great Russell Street, where the former Chronicle & Echo building once stood.

The former Chron building in Upper Mounts was demolished in 2014 and some of the land was sold to Aldi for a new supermarket, which opened in 2018, but the residential area has been left derelict ever since.

In July 2019, Northampton developers, Bauhaus Living, submitted an application for 14 three-bedroom houses, with two parking spaces provided per house.

The developers are hoping to complete the development, with access from Great Russell Street only, by “late 2020” and building works are set to begin in about four weeks.

Co-owner of Bauhaus Living, Andy James, said each property will be fitted with a smart meter and ultra-fast broadband as standard.

He said: “We are adopting a unique approach that allows us to design buildings where every aspect has been considered.

“From larger living spaces to well-designed widow placement that maximises access to daylight, it’s important that we create homes that owners will love.”
